Cohen said he has acquired Hammond Residential GMAC Real Estate, a Brookline company he cofounded in 1991 that was sold to GMAC Home Services nine years ago. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The firm has 12 offices in Boston and its western suburbs that collectively sold more than $1 billion worth of residential real estate in 2008, Cohen said.

Noting that the company he helped launch 18 years ago started out during a tough time for the local residential real estate market, Cohen said he was motivated to buy the firm because he sees opportunity in a down market.
