On 2 July 2007, Kyiv Mayor Leonid Chernovetskyi cancelled permission to construct a restaurant near the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves. City deputies of the Chernovetskyi Bloc personally broke the fence surrounding the construction area.
Chernovetskyi stressed: “I promised that on the site where the former administration illegally allotted land for the construction of a restaurant there would be a lovely river bank.” Also, the mayor thanked the monastery’s priests “for their support in restoring justice.” On 12 June a delegation of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves protested and suspended construction of the restaurant.
According to Fr. Varsonofii of the monastery, the ban on construction was really necessary since the Lower Caves of the Kyivan Monastery of the Caves are located 200 meters from the construction site.
